Gaylord Dual Tech Nozzle Update - AFFF & PFAS

An Update on the Dual Tech Nozzle Quencher and PFAS Restrictions

Multiple states have either enacted or have proposed legislation regarding per- or polyfluoroalkyl substances (“PFAS”), which may impact legacy models including Gaylord Industries Dual Tech nozzle.  This memorandum summarizes the impacts of these regulations on these potentially affected models.

Background

Although Gaylord discontinued manufacture of the Dual Tech Nozzle Quencher Water Spray Fire Suppression system in 2006, we have continued to support these existing systems with replacement consumables.

The Dual Tech nozzle (PN:19046) consists of a frangible bulb, release valve, two water mist spray nozzles, and two small canisters of AFFF (Aqueous Film Forming Foam).  When the frangible bulb reaches a set temperature, it breaks and releases water that mixes AFFF to suppress the fire.  The AFFF material incorporated into this system is manufactured by Angus and contains PFAS under many state definitions.

Please reference Angus’ website at https://www.angusfire.co.uk/products/foam-concentrates#guidance-documents for more details.

Regulation

The following states have regulations that may restrict the sale or use of AFFF, with limited exceptions: CA, CO, CT, HI, IL, ME, MD, MN, NH, NJ, NY, VT, and WA (collectively, the “Impacted States”).  Therefore, unless a specific exemption applies, the current AFFF-based Dual Tech nozzle will not be available for purchase in these states until a non-PFAS solution can be substituted into the nozzle’s canisters.

Use

Please note that there is no exposure to the AFFF unless there is a fire event, in which case the chemical will be released and the fire extinguished. In the event of a fire, the 400ML of 1% AFFF will be mixed with water until shut off.  In the event of a discharge, please verify required cleanup procedures with the local municipality/authority having jurisdiction, as many states have regulated the use and cleanup of AFFF.

Disposal

Please consult your local waste disposal regulator for details on how to dispose of expired canisters or discharged components of the Dual Tech nozzle.

Going forward

We are actively pursuing an alternate non-PFAS material substitute for use in the Dual Tech nozzle.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions, comments, or concerns you may have.
